Lot 587
WEIGHTS, Greek. Weight of 1 Tetarton (?) (Lead, 42x45 mm, 102.13 g), Dionysios, magistrate for the third time, circa 2nd-1st centuries BC. Four identical incuse square countermarks carefully stamped in each corner, reading ΔION/YCIO/Y •Γ•. Rev. Blank. Istanbul -. Pera -. Silifke -. A very interesting and unusual piece. Some deposits and with a minor scuff on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The weight of this unusual piece perhaps corresponds to 1 Tetarton = 1/4 of a Mna of 408.52 g. The magistrate Dionysios, who held his office for the third time, likely was a public official overseeing the production of standardized market weights in his polis
